I recently visited a dairy in central Michigan that claims a 1.95 feed efficiency due to a mix of the use of SiloKing inoculant from AgriKing, and the use of their line of enzymes. The dairy claimed to be around 62% forages (corn silage and haylage) with no small grains. Is this even a possibility? Has anyone seen anything close to this around?
The devil is in the details applies here. The claim sounds like an AgriKing marketing claim and if it is really true, hats off to everyone involved. Let’s validate the claim…
1. Is the 1.95 feed eff. adjusted for fat and protein, i.e. ECM:DMI?
2. Is the milk production based on DHIA test day or is it pounds in the tank divided by an accurate cow count in the tank?
3. How is DMI calculated?
4. Does the herd have a very low DIM?
5. Is the herd losing body condition?
I would argue that if all of these question are vetted and it proves out that the 1.95 is accurate then the herd will be losing BCS to support this level of efficiency. So to answer your question, Is this even a possibility? Yes, but not for very long.
Good points by Mr Fry. As I always say, show me the money.
