I have a producer with 17,000 heifers in a feed yard. He normally chops rye relatively mature (slightly headed; 14 tons/acre). He is wondering what would happen if he used a shredlage processor. He did a preliminary test where he was able to reduce the volume by over 1/3. Has anyone seen anything like this?
Talked to Roger Olson (“father” of the shredder) and he said it works great. Stems are kind of spongy and the shredder more or less macerates the stems and it packs better. Takes less space in the mixer wagon which will be a big advantage when you’re feeding this many heifers. One watch out he said to try to keep the dirt out of the chopper.
