We have a herd that is able to receive “dumped” milk to include into a dairy ration. The is a handler that is dumping about 10 loads a day. whole Milk is about 12% solids that include protein, fat, lactose and ash. One concern is the C18:1 fatty acid which is about 20% of the total fatty acids. I think this is cis-9 which should actually be good for the rumen.
Because this herd has a digester, my recommendation is to do a titration to an acceptable inclusion with the overflow going to the digester. The digester loves the milk so I suspect the rumen will also. Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.
I spoke with several people from academia about this and nobody had a yei or nei, they just did not know if there would be any positives or negatives in doing this, however the three people I spoke to, said they would not feed milk to dairy (milking) cows.
Do you know how the herd is doing? The last I heard they were feeding some with no significant change. The TMR in the morning looking like it did when fed. Thanks for the comments.
they only fed milk for a few short days, milk components came down during this time, but is hard to say that it happened because of the milk, as of Thursday it appeared that they were coming back up.
Components have been down everywhere at the same time.
